A narration describes the scene succinctly: "In a distant, lonely inn, late at night...". We see an unassuming, three-story inn with some minor decorations, only a few rooms, and an attached utility shed. It is winter; snow is on the ground and a single tree in the background is bare. It's night, and nobody is around. We zoom into a window. Inside, the room is only lit by the moonlight streaming in. All we see is a bed and the corner of someone's head. A closeup on the figure turning a page in a book. The camera pulls out to reveal this is Howard, up late at night, studying this book. His notes are scattered around the table, with an inkwell (apparently branded with the same decorations as the inn itself) nearby. Though studiously studying, Howard doesn't necessarily seem all that content.
